Polyester Resins
Gelcoats
Tooling Gelcoat Recommended for production fiberglass tools because of its low shrink and durability—harder finish, high temperature and chemical resistance. Color—Black. Catalyst MEKP Ratio 1.5 to 2%
Gelcoat General Purpose Gelcoat used for producing parts, not as durable as the Tooling Gelcoat. Color—Clear for custom pigmenting. Catalyst MEKP Ratio 1.5-2%
Additive
Surfacing Agent Gelcoat additive used in final coat. Helps Gelcoat surface dry by sealing exposed surface from air. May have a wax bleed that can be wiped off with acetone. Use at 5% to 7%. **Shake well before using.
Application Suggestions:
Because of wrinkles, discoloring, bubbles and cracking, a working process must be developed. All the above problems are caused by inconsistent heat control during cure.
1. Add MEKP (RCHP-90) at 1.5- 2% level to start.
2. Target goal is to create an even exotherm (chemical reaction of heat that dries the resin).
* Too high of a temperature leads to lower viscosity, drainage and loss of sprayability.
* Too low of a temperature leads to high viscosity, affects sprayability, increases air entrapment and requires higher gun pressure.
3. Accurate resin to filler ratios is critical to the spray pattern.
4. Resin, filler, glass, molds, and work area should be 60F to 85F for consistent and optimal system performance. User must account for mother-nature factors, i.e., cold weather will slow the gel & cure, and create higher viscosities and poor sprayability & drainage.
5. When changing types and manufacturers of fabrics, users will notice difference of wet out and air entrapment. High moisture content in fiberglass, filler, or air, may effect gel & cure or wet out. High fiberglass content leads to stickiness during roll out.
